Excellent post. The geopolitical battles over natural resources, and resulting socio-economic instabilities, seem to be never-ending. Before rare earths and oil it was nitrates, which caused just as much bloodshed and hegemonic geopolitical strong-arming as we see today. The latter shortage was solved with innovation and the creation of an inorganic alternative, but the question is when will Congress learn from this and provide meaningful R&D incentives to solve or current problems instead of continually subsidizing obsolete industries? For further reading on the historical background I recommend this book: http://us.macmillan.com/amostdamnableinvention
